Although I have had the odd day at Rockland's Mere Fishery during the past couple of years, it's been 4 years since I was last able to attend James & Katie's season opening day. Either ill health or work just prevented me from joining until yesterday.
It was lovely to be invited back and to attend their competition day and even better, winning something from the prize table. Great fun!
Four years ago at this time, I blogged about Rockland's Mere Fishery ( see link)
Back then the blog gave a small insight into the new changes that had taken place at Rockland's and how the fishery was developing. Although it was then still in it's infancy, it had two of the nicest people steering it and guiding it in the right direction.
Yesterday's competition was going to give me the chance to return to my favourite small fishery. To have a full day's fishing in the company of fellow fly fishermen, a small competition and enjoy the whole day with our host James and Katie.
Four years ago everything was new; the new larger lake was open and with the banks and surrounding landscaping planted with new trees and bushes, James had a vision and he forced those ideas into action.
Well here and now four years on and his baby (and I do mean the fishery) is starting to grow up!
Looking around the fishery, it is maturing wonderfully, offering a little oasis in the Norfolk countryside that any Fisherman, Fly or otherwise should visit.
It's difficult to run a fishery really well and to make it successful I am sure requires a lot of hard work and dedicated ideas. Being on show in the public eye is not easy either, having to smile and make pleasant chit chat, try to engage with all who visit is hard, but they definitely make it look easy!
It's looking after their customers with a smile. You only have to see the faces on my fellow fly fishermen to know James and Katie have got it right!
We all left contented and wanting to come back soon...
At last the main Fly Fishing season is here. I still visit the odd fishery through the winter month's, but these day's the weather defiantly affects my decisions about going!
If I am looking for a place for the odd winter fish, Rockland's Mere Fishery is a place I like to consider. It's open through the winter and offers a great club house for the odd warm up and coffee. Having an on sight toilet at a fishery does not seem much, but be assured it is. I have a few female Fly Fishing friends who often suggest that their choice of fishery is made by whether there is a loo or not.... so having one is a plus.
The other reason I enjoy Rockland's is that the banks surrounding part of the lake offer a place were you can get away from that cold wind. Any rest bite from the winter chill, makes for a better session. So if you fancy a new winter venue to you - give it a try next winter, you won't regret it. James & Katie will be please to see you!
